Wat ging er fout bij de zendmasten?

Translated: What went wrong at the antenna towers. A Dutch news video not really exposing what went wrong but it is a nice video though. Unfortenately only in Dutch.

Thanks to PE5TS who directed me to this video.

Solution found for the USBlink VOX data modem problem

Eureka! The red
LED proves TX
is finally working!
Last year I got the idea from Julian G4ILO's blog to build myself a USBlink vox data modem that is ideal for portable use. The idea was to make a kind of usb stick so I would only have to use one cable to connect to the radio. Unfortenately I didn't get the modem to work, you can read my post about it here. I know how components should behave and what they are doing, but I don't know a thing about designing or changing a circuit. Luckely enough there are a lot of people amongst radio amateurs that know a lot more about these things. So, I posted my problem into a Dutch HAM radio forum and got a answer from Fred PA4TIM  who was able to analyse and simulate the circuit. He told me that the circuit wouldn't work without a resistor at the collector of the Q1 transistor. He suggested a 2K2 resistor which I tried and it worked. Remains the question why it worked without this resistor at Julian's modem? Anyway, the modem is working now and is ready for test on the radio. But since I don't have that much time it probabely will have to wait till winter.

Simulation of the circuit by PA4TIM
Small 2K2 resistor inserted

Mercy Ships DXpedition certificate

Received the Mercy Ships DXpedition certificate today. A very nice design job has been done. The certificate is actually a photo. This one can only be obtained if you were able to contact all 3 MS DXpeditions from Liberia, Benin and Sierra Leone. It will get a place sometime somewhere in my new radioshack.

Vacation day...

Yesterday we finally went on a well spend vacation day. We brought Anneli to my parents and visited Fogelsangh state in Friesland. It's a small 17th century estate and not really a museum but it's worth visiting. I visited musea in the past that were not as interesting as this little "castle". Anyway, since my XYL has a serious problem with her back she had to visit a physiotherapist first. I had to wait in the car and brought my Alinco handheld with me just to see if I could probabely reach PC4T who is on vacation on Ameland Island. Well he replied on my CQ on the 70cm coversity channel and we had a nice QSO until my XYL came back and Paul's batteries were low. I forgot how hot my Alinco becomes when I talk with it just in my hands, wow I nearly burned my hand ;-(  We had a great day although the weather was not that good, we had a nice walk in the forest that belongs to the estate as well and visited some villages nearby. Today I found a present in the mail all the way from Costa Rica. Casey TI2/NA7U sent me some stamps he offered on his blog to the one that send him a e-mail first. I was the lucky and only one so, thanks Casey as you can see I already got my stamp collection ready to fit them in.

Just in time, worked STØR

Just in time I realized that if I would have to work the new DXCC Southern Sudan it should be on this evening, I haven't got  time tomorrow and the DXpedition is till the 10th. For the first time in 2 months I connected the Icom 706 to the antenna and checked the SWR. It was ok and ready for DX. Then I consulted the Summit DX cluster. And yes, there were spots from STØR on 17m. But when I was listening there I had no hope to make a QSO. The signal was weak just audible and the pile-up still huge. Anyway, I had to copy some photos from the camera to the computer so I was listening. I just thought I give it a try on a clean split frequency with in mind that it probabely would not happen. But surprisingly STØR came back with "BAS" your 59 your call again. And I shouted "PE4BAS".....PE4BAS your 59 73. DXCC nr. 194 nice surprise and just in time...

Dus ik schreeuwde "PE4BAS".....PE4BAS your 59 73.

QRP fun in the Eemshaven photoshow.

Well, didn't have time to make a decent photoshow yesterday. But I did today so you readers have some more pictures with the story. Enjoy !

QRP from the Eemshaven

Anneli and I did have a day with the two of us since my XYL had to go to a wedding. So we went shopping in the morning and when she did her afternoon nap I did get the mobile setup ready to go. It was easy as that since I tested it already, SWR was great again on 20m. Then I thought I better get the car back into the garage in the shadow before it get to hot inside for the little girl. Not thinking of the big antenna I drove the car into the garage.....snap! Luckely it was only the magmount that broke. I had another one but with a so called DV connection for a CB antenna, I converted it a little so the 20m mobile antenna would fit again. Just in time as Anneli woke up. We did a "high" tea together and then we went to the Eemshaven (harbour). We got a nice spot to park the car on top of a dyke near the water, the ideal position for some QRP DX. Did hear a lot of strong signals and made one QSO with EW8A Igor from Belarus. Anneli already tried the mike, disconnected of course. I don't think she had any idea what was happening but she had a lot of fun looking outside the car.

Time issues

It has been 2 months ago that I actually made a QSO via HF. In the meantime my computer crashed and I still didn't have time to install al software again. Since we had some rainy days in the past weeks I had time to install HRD V4 and 5 again but didn't connect the radio yet. Another problem is the time issue on both computers. Julian G4ILO wrote about meinberg NTP time server a couple of months ago. According to him this program is more up to date then the outdated Dimension4. I installed meinberg NTP on my laptop to test and it did the job untill a week ago. Suddenly it seemed the software did not sync the time anymore, and whatever I tried I couldn't solve it. I disabled the firewall, downloaded the meinberg NTP monitoring software and tried all kind of configurations I even installed the program again. But since I've limited time I finally decide to get back to Dimension4 and although it is software from 2004 it still works very well. I'll check the time on the desktop as well later, but will consider to install the reliable D4 as well. Work in the garden is time consuming as well, but the main work is done now.....and finally I've got 2 weeks vacation at last hope I will have some time for the hobby.
